Starlink Simulation produced Low Latency when Inter-Satelite Laser Links is left out

University of London Professor, Mark Handley, has created two horrifying videos based on the moves of his simulation of early 1,584 satellites phase of SpaceX’s Starlink internet Service Constellation. in the first video he assumes that satellites contain an inter-satellite laser link (ISLLs). 

SpaceX has plans to use ISLLs in the future because their initial satellite does not contain them.  At a speed of 27,000km/hr., they use a state-of -art-technology, which may face some political challenges in some countries. It is like one year or more since SpaceX started launching ISLL- equipped satellites. In the second video, he assumes phase 1 satellites do not Contain ISLLs.

Each satellite poses 4 phased-array antennas which can quickly switch narrowly focused links to the terrestrial antennas falling within the vast “footprint” region. The surface antennas can connect to the ground station or final-user terminal via the internet. In the absence of ISLLs, long-distance traffic transmission occurs through bouncing packets up as well as down between satellites and earth’s surface. 

Most of the people, including us, have assumed that the “bent pipe” hops would significantly improve latency on the long-distance path. Handley simulation shows that it is not as fast as the ISSL path; long bent-pipe will automatically have lower latency than the terrestrial fiber routes amid the similar two points.

For example, the six-hop route amid Seattle and New York, the bent pipe route contains round-trip time of around 36ms for the 78ms for the current internet and 38ms for the imaginary best circle path that will be impossible due to mountains and other hindrances.
